Summary

This PR adds the standard org.testcontainers=true label to all containers created by testcontainers-rs, achieving ecosystem consistency with Java and Go implementations.

Changes

  1. testcontainers/src/core/containers/request.rs: Added default labels org.testcontainers=true and org.testcontainers.managed-by=testcontainers in ContainerRequest::from() implementation.

  2. testcontainers/src/runners/async_runner.rs: Updated test async_start_should_apply_expected_labels to expect the new org.testcontainers=true label.

Root Cause

Only org.testcontainers.managed-by=testcontainers was being added by default. Other language implementations (Java, Go) also add org.testcontainers=true for ecosystem consistency. This made it harder to filter/clean up testcontainers across different language implementations using the standard label.

Testing

  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check - PASSED
  • cargo clippy - PASSED
  • cargo test --features blocking - 85 passed (1 pre-existing unrelated failure)
  • cargo test --features blocking sync_runner - 35 passed
  • cargo test --features "blocking reusable-containers" --lib - 89 passed
  • cargo test --all-features --lib - 104 passed
  • async_start_should_apply_expected_labels - PASSED (verifies both labels)

Closes #926

@DDtKey @bergkvist would one of you mind taking a look when you get a chance? I have addressed the bot's P2 note about the Compose path in a reply and kept this PR scoped to the runner's own containers. Tests and fmt and clippy are all green locally. Happy to adjust if you want it handled differently.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Newly created containers now include labels identifying them as managed by Testcontainers. These labels are visible when inspecting containers and can help distinguish Testcontainers-managed containers from others.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reusable containers created before these labels were added can now be found and restarted instead of being recreated, preserving reuse across upgrades.

Walkthrough

Container requests now include two default labels. Reusable-container lookup omits the standard label from its filters, so it can find and restart a stopped legacy container without that label.

Changes

Container labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Default labels and test expectation
testcontainers/src/core/containers/request.rs, testcontainers/src/runners/async_runner.rs
ContainerRequest::from sets org.testcontainers=true and org.testcontainers.managed-by=testcontainers. The async runner label test expects the standard label.
Legacy reusable-container lookup
testcontainers/src/runners/async_runner.rs
Reusable-container lookup omits org.testcontainers from its filters but retains it on new containers. A regression test verifies that a stopped legacy container is reused and running.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 437b5

New containers receive the intended labels, while legacy reusable containers remain discoverable. No actionable merge-blocking risk is established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 437b5

The standard labels preserve existing ownership controls and support reuse of older containers. However, reusable lookup now ignores explicitly supplied values of the standard label, potentially selecting a different container when callers previously used that value to distinguish containers. Exposure remains bounded by the same Docker endpoint and the remaining selectors.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Reusable lookup unconditionally removes org.testcontainers, including explicitly supplied nonempty values that previously participated in matching. If a caller relied on that value to distinguish containers, the request can select another matching container and subsequently restart or explicitly remove its ID. Remaining ownership, session and caller selectors constrain this conditional exposure. No external caller relying on this distinction is evidenced, and the marker is not an authenticated isolation boundary.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified selection exposure is limited to reusable requests and competing containers visible through the configured Docker endpoint that satisfy all remaining predicates. Supplying a competing container requires authority to create or arrange matching containers there; no new Docker credentials or cross-daemon authority are introduced by the changed labels. Actual daemon tenancy is unavailable.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional regression exists for callers using a nonempty custom standard-marker value as a distinguishing selector: an otherwise matching container with a different or missing value can now be selected. Ordinary requests preserve the base selector set. The legacy test covers an empty override, not reliance on a nonempty custom value.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing matching controls remain: forced managed-by, session ID for CurrentSession, other nonempty caller labels, and name or network when supplied. Cleanup remains container-ID-based rather than authorized by the new ecosystem label. These metadata predicates do not authenticate an actor with access to the same Docker daemon.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The creation retry, readiness timeout, restart ordering and ID-based cleanup paths are unchanged in the base-to-head comparison. Reusable handles continue to skip automatic removal on drop. Successful legacy restart is covered by the added test, but concurrent selection, cancellation and partial-failure recovery are not established by that test; source inspection does not demonstrate a newly introduced failure-cleanup guarantee.

Hi — could a maintainer please approve the pending Continuous Integration run? Some context: the previous run (#1698, Aug 26) failed with 0 jobs during the GitHub Actions incident window that day; the workflow file at my head is byte-identical to main and my diff touches only 2 Rust source files, so there was nothing to fix. I just pushed a retrigger and the fresh run is now waiting on fork-PR approval. Thanks!

legacy lookup without the label before attempting to create a container, so
reusable containers with a fixed container_name are reused rather than causing a
name conflict.

…filter

Pre-existing reusable containers created before ContainerRequest added
the standard org.testcontainers label cannot match a lookup filtered
on it, causing a 409 name conflict on fixed container names (or a
silent duplicate when unnamed). Keep the label on created containers
but omit it from the get_container filter, restoring pre-PR lookup
semantics.

Add regression test reusing a legacy-labeled container.

CI on the latest head (merge 55266c9, run 37330775487) is sitting at action_required, same as the two previous runs. Looks like the fork-PR approval gate again. Could a maintainer approve the run? Once CI is green, the armed auto-merge should take it from there. Thanks!
